• The Musk Monkeyflower, known for its vibrant scent as The Common Musk, was imported to Europe from the American west coast, where its sun-yellow flowers grow on fuzzy, sticky stalks. It became wildly popular in Victorian England for its rich musk aroma, spreading from aristocratic gardens to street markets. But around the early twentieth century, the flowers suddenly lost their scent—both cultivated and wild. Botanists never solved the mystery, and the flower’s popularity faded. Today, Musk Monkeyflowers still grow quietly in parts of Europe and New Zealand, perhaps waiting for a return to their fragrant glory.
